The Illinois Railway Museum is located in Union, Illinois is considered the largest railroad museum in the United States. The museum includes over 400 pieces of prototype equipment within its collection in addition to numerous displays. Rides are available from April through October where visitors may ride on the various electric, steam and diesel powered trains.
The museum operations are concentrated around its main campus just east of Union, Illinois. There are train rides available on the main line and the streetcar loop too. From April through October the Electric trains are operated and from May through September the steam trains and diesel trains are operated. The Trolley bus is operated the first Saturdays of June, July, September and October. They are the only museum which proudly offers trolley bus rides.
The Illinois Electric Railway Museum is host to special annual events like a Day Out with Thomas, Chicago Day, July 4th Trolley Pageant, Diesel Days in July, the Vintage Transportation Extravaganza, Scrap a Train scrap-booking event, Terror on the Railroad Halloween event and Happy Holiday Railway in the fall.
